Questions & Answers
How do you suggest my husband and I instill patriotism in our children?

This may come as a surprise, but the best way to foster patriotism in your children and in yourself can be summed up in one word: gratefulness. Patriotism diminishes when we focus on America's shortcomings; when we look cynically on its institutions; and when we sneer at its achievements. Too often in our society we emphasize what our country owes us. We've become the "Entitlement Generation."

We question the sincerity of our past ("After all, Jefferson and Washington owned slaves!"). We look pessimistically at our future ("All politicians are corrupt so why bother?").

Gratitude, however, can change this. A grateful attitude toward the sacrifice of those who've gone before us - who've made possible our comforts and freedoms and protections - fosters patriotism. A patriot is someone who loves, supports, and defends his country. This comes from a grateful heart. As social critics Michael and Diane Medved, whose grandparents were poor immigrants, rhetorically ask, "How could we ever repay this country - this island of sanity and goodwill in the vast, turbulent ocean of historic human misery - for all the gifts it has showered on us so freely, so open-handedly, and with such an uplifting and generous spirit?"

In their book, Saving Childhood, they suggest several ways to instill in children a love of our country: "Fly the flag. Sing patriotic songs in your home. Read history as a family, and recite the great words of heroes, such as those in William J. Bennett's Our Sacred Honor. Hang a map of the United States on the wall and teach your children geography and state capitals."

But most of all, tell your children stories that illustrate America's generosity in freedom, opportunity, and hope. Contrast it to other nations of the world, and let your children learn to be grateful.
